After sitting in the top five of the Chapel Hill Regional for the first two rounds, a rough outing on the course during Wednesday caused Mississippi State’s women’s golf team to slip two spots to seventh place and miss the final cut with a 21-over finish.
The Bulldogs entered the 12-team regional on Monday as the No. 3 seed and immediately rose to fourth place with a 2-over finish to Day 1 – powered by Avery Weed’s 1-under performance – and they carried that momentum into Day 2 with rounds of even par from Weed and Samantha Whateley on the par-70 course. That left the Bulldogs heading into the final day in fifth place at 9-over, just five strokes above the projected cutline.
With a chance to solidify their spot in the national championship tournament, State couldn’t maintain its grip on its top-five placement as the bogeys piled up. Lynn van der Sluijs carded a round of 5-over to begin the day with seven holes of 1-over par golf, and Moa Stridh followed up with five more and finished 2-over. Ines Belchior and Sam Whateley each bogeyed seven holes as well for 9-over and 6-over, respectively, and Weed closed the day off with a 1-under performance.
While the Bulldogs were slipping, North Carolina State, Michigan State and Virginia each caught fire and took advantage with final rounds of 3-over, 2-over and 4-over, respectively, in a three-way tie for fourth place at 18-over and shut out MSU’s hopes of advancing.
Texas captured first place at 5-under, North Carolina took second at 6-over and Oklahoma State finished third at 8-over.
