STARKVILLE — Mississippi State University added another big target receiver prospect to its 2013 football recruiting class Monday with the verbal commitment of Scott Austin.
Austin, a Biloxi High School senior, called Bulldogs offensive coordinator Les Koenning and MSU head coach Dan Mullen Monday afternoon to inform them he’s shutting down his recruiting process.
“Its close to home and I like everything they are doing at Mississippi State,” Austin said. “I am very happy to get this decision over with and know that I have a future home and a future team.
The 6-foot-4 Austin, who is the fourth receiver and 11th overall player to pledge his services to MSU, is a consensus three-star prospect according to all of the major recruiting websites. He is rated as high as the 10th-best player in the state of Mississippi by 247sports.com. He joins Deandre Woods and B.J. Hammond to Bulldogs’ projected Top 25 recruiting class according to 247sports.com.
“They made me feel like I was a priority and I liked them the most of all the schools recruiting me,” Austin said.
Of top seven in-state players that have committed to a school for 2013 class, six have pleadged their services to the MSU program.
Austin chose MSU after receiving scholarship offers by the University of Mississippi, Georgia Tech University and Southern Mississippi University. Austin caught 38 passes for 698 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior for a team that won its region and finished in the Class 6A quarterfinals.
“I think it’s a win-win for both Scott and Mississippi State,” Biloxi coach John Shannon told The Mississippi Press. “Mississippi State is looking to throw the ball more than they’ve done the last couple of years and they’re looking to get a big, tall vertical receiver, and that is Scott. He’s been developing over the last couple of years and he’s a guy who can make a big play in a game.”
