For the second time this season, the Mississippi University for Women women’s basketball team was defeated by Rhodes College, this time by a 77-53 count Sunday at Pohl Gym.
The Lynx, No. 20 in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25, also defeated the Owls 84-51 on Nov. 12 in Memphis.
The Owls (0-7) never led against the Lynx (8-2), who scored the first seven points of the game, led 25-6 after one quarter and was ahead 44-19 at the intermission.
Senior guard Rokila Wallace led The W with 17 points. Wallace was 6 for 18 from the field and 5 of 7 from the line. She also hauled in 7 rebounds.
Senior guard Christiana Harris had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Harris was a perfect 10 for 10 at the line and dished off a game-high 5 assists.
Junior forward MG Chamberlain was the Owls’ third double-figure scorer, netting 13 points on a 5-for-12 shooting effort.
Neither team took good care of the ball, with Rhodes committing 23 turnovers and The W totaling 21. The W racked up 11 steals, including 4 each by Jasmine Shaw and Hannah Duran.
The difference in the contest proved to be inside, where Rhodes outrebounded the Owls 51-35 and dominated in the paint, outscoring the home team 52-18.
The Owls will be back at home at 5 p.m. Tuesday to face another foe for the second time this season. Millsaps College edged The W 64-60 on Nov. 21 at the Hangar Dome in Jackson.
East Mississippi 83, Northwest Mississippi 71: Shakira Wilson’s career-high 33 points led the EMCC women over the Rangers on Thursday Keyes T. Currie Coliseum in Scooba.
The Lions jumped out to a 16-2 lead by the 3:40 mark of the opening quarter, but the visitors fought back, scoring the first 12 points of the second quarter including — 8 points in a row from Tierra Trotter — to take a 20-19 lead.
That would prove to be the Rangers’ only lead of the game, as EMCC responded with consecutive Markiema Lancaster buckets and later with 7 straight points by Wilson to open up a 35-26 halftime advantage.
The teams traded runs during the third quarter, with EMCC building the lead to 15 and Northwest trimming it back to 9. The Rangers drew as close as 7 points early in the fourth quarter, but Wilson scored 12 points, including three 3-pointers, during a 2-minute span to stretch the lead to 76-56 at the 3:44 mark.
Wilson’s big night included shooting 13 of 17 from the field, including 5 of 7 from beyond the 3-point arc. Kyunna Thomas had 11 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double, while Lancaster totaled 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Siarra Jackson chipped in with 10 points and 6 rebounds for EMCC (4-4).
The Rangers (6-4) also had four players score in double figures, led by Trotter’s 15 points. Nunley and Cailey Walker followed with 12 points apiece, while I’Yana Ragin added 10.
The EMCC women will hit the road Monday for a 6 p.m. contest against Southwest Mississippi in Summit.
Men’s basketball
East Mississippi 70, Northwest Mississippi 64: Eight first-half three-pointers sparked the Lions (6-2) to a road victory Thursday at Howard Coliseum in Senatobia.
EMCC’s balanced scoring attack was led by Jakorie Smith’s 14 points. Highlighted by a game-changing, 3-point shooting display in the opening half, Blake Butler registered his first collegiate double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Danny Washington added 13 points, while Nick Walker and Traemond Pittman contributed 9 points apiece to the winning effort. Walker also grabbed 11 rebounds.
With the Lions clinging to a 22-20 lead, Butler then nailed three 3-pointers to extend EMCC’s advantage to 31-20 midway through the first half. The margin increased to 40-27 with 4 minutes left on a Traemond Pittman three-point play following a steal.
The Lions led 46-37 at the half.
EMCC’s lead was 64-51 at the 5:30 mark, but Northwest went on a 9-0 run to pull within four at 3:42. But baskets by Washington and Butler staved off the Rangers, and the 68-60 score stood until the final 20 seconds.
Isaiah Gaines topped all scorers with 20 points along with a game-high 14 rebounds, while Joseph Cooper tallied 19 points for the Rangers.
East Mississippi’s men’s team will return home at 6 p.m. Monday to take on Southwest Mississippi at Currie Coliseum.
Prep girls basketball
Southern Academy 52, Pickens Academy 34: Kate Wilkins scored 18 points Saturday, but the Pirates suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Cougars.
Southern’s Lida Lewis poured in 25 points to lead all scorers.
Pickens Academy (3-1) next will face Patrician Academy at 6 p.m. Monday in Butler, Alabama.
