A rose to spring, which officially arrived Friday. Charles Dickens described spring as the time of year when it’s winter in the shade and summer in the sunlight. It’s the time of baseball and picnics, gardening and farmers markets, kite flying and outdoor festivals. In our part of the world, spring weather often seems to come too late and leave too early. In appreciation of spring’s arrival we urge everyone to take a walk through their neighborhood and pick up the trash they find along the way. It will be both a token of appreciation, a service to our community and an opportunity to enjoy the season.
A rose to Iain Vasey, who made his first official appearance as Golden Triangle Development LINK CEO at the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors meeting on Monday. Vasey was hired in February to replace longtime CEO Joe Max Higgins. Vasey is in the enviable position of taking over an economic development engine that continues to be a shining star, having brought in more than $10 billion in capital investments over the past 20 years. He won’t have to fix that engine as much as keep it humming along. With more than 30 years of economic development experience in Texas, Louisiana and most recently Oregon, Vasey is well-suited for the important task at hand. For our communities’ sake and his, we wish him great success. Vasey is scheduled to appear on The Dispatch’s Between the Headlines podcast on Thursday.
A rose to Hagan Walker and Anna Barker, undoubtedly the most successful entrepreneurs in the Golden Triangle, as their business, Glo Companies, continues its remarkable growth. Five years after moving into the old Rex Theater Building in Starkville, the company has quickly outgrown its home and will be moving into the old Rick’s Furniture building on Stark Road. Since beginning operations 11 years ago, the company has grown to a valuation of $20 million as of 2022, according to PR Newswire, with sales of five million products in 40 countries. It’s worth remembering that Glo could make its headquarters virtually anywhere. The founders consistently choose to remain here where they stand as an example for local entrepreneurs to follow. We congratulate Hagan and Anna and their team as their journey continues.
