A Starkville man was arrested for allegedly hitting a police car after fleeing a traffic stop early Friday evening.
Jaquez Gray, 24, is charged with failure to yield when an officer signals and simple assault on a police officer. Both charges are felonies.
Gray was initially flagged down for “minor traffic violations,” according to a Starkville Police Department press release. Gray allegedly refused to stop, fleeing from police and attempting to leave the city in a Jeep Grand.
Gray’s vehicle eventually struck a police car while exiting an apartment complex on Blackjack Road and came to a stop.
Sgt. Brandon Lovelady, SPD’s public information officer, told The Dispatch Friday that the car Gray hit was occupied but nobody was injured in the incident.
Lovelady said Gray will face more charges than the two felonies for at least the traffic misdemeanors during and before his flight. Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office and Mississippi State University Police Department both assisted SPD in the pursuit.
Gray was taken to the Oktibbeha County Jail, where bail had not been set as of Friday evening, as Gray was still awaiting his initial appearance.
