Gaskin established the award in 2021 to recognize citizens for their positive work in the community. Affectionately known as “Coach D,” Briggs founded the Saving the Youth nonprofit that nurtures personal and athletic development of young men, with an emphasis on both basketball and life skills. Participants play in basketball tournaments across the country and tour college campuses. This year, Briggs started a spring break enrichment camp that challenged youth participants to engage in hands-on learning and personal development outside of basketball.
