Cullen Paradis has joined The Dispatch staff as its Starkville bureau reporter.
His first day was Monday.
In his role, Paradis will report on local government issues in Starkville and Oktibbeha County, as well as write pieces on the people, issues and trends that impact that beat. He will also write general assignment pieces covering topics throughout the newspaper’s coverage area.
Paradis comes to The Dispatch after spending the last three years as a reporter for the weekly Boston Guardian. Before that, he spent almost a year as a reporter for the International Business Times and served a five-month internship with a private investigation company in Vermont.
Growing up, he lived all across the U.S., including California, Colorado and Vermont. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science, with a minor in Spanish, from the University of Vermont.
“The Dispatch struck me as exactly the kind of newsroom I was looking for, a dynamic paper that keeps its community up to date on the area’s comings and goings while still finding time to dig deeper on the stories that matter,” Paradis said. “… I have a longstanding love of our country and its people, and I don’t want to let any corner of it go dismissed or unheard.
“… I’d like to join in with the community’s efforts to grow and look out for each other, an effort in which good reporting is vital,” he added. “I’d like to meet people and learn about them, hopefully helping them resolve some of their problems along the way. And, coming from Boston, I’m honestly really looking forward to having some decent food.”
Zack Plair, managing editor for The Dispatch, said Paradis’ passion, as well as his journalism experience, is a welcome addition to the newsroom.
“In just his first week, Cullen has jumped in with both feet,” Plair said. “He’s very talented, cares a great deal about his work and fits very well with the newspaper’s mission of being the region’s most complete source for local news.”
