MABEN — A special election to fill the vacant seat on Maben’s Board of Aldermen has drawn its first candidate.
Former Alderman Robert Herd resigned from the seat to the board in early June because he took a new job. There will be a special election to fill the seat Aug. 13.
All aldermen serve at-large in Maben, rather than by designated ward.
Roy Holland is so far the only candidate to qualify for the race. He told The Dispatch he decided to run after his recent retirement from Jim’s Auto Parts store in Maben.
“I’ve worked all my life,” he said. “I’ve just now retired, and I thought I’d run for a little office.”
Holland grew up in the Delta before moving to Maben in 1977. While he has never run for office, he said his desire to better the community will help him excel in the position.
“I think a lot about this town, and I want to do things for the town,” he said. “I think I could be a good alderman.”
Recently, Holland said he led an initiative to purchase and place 50 American flags throughout the town for special occasions like Memorial Day and Independence Day.
To qualify, candidates must be a Maben resident for at least two years immediately preceding the day of the election. Candidates will have until 5 p.m. July 24 to submit qualifying paperwork for the race in the city clerk’s office. The election will be held at Maben City Hall.
