A Northside fire Saturday destroyed a home and claimed the life of the resident’s dog.
Columbus Fire and Rescue Chief Duane Hughes said firefighters responded at about 7:20 p.m. to the 1600 block of 21st Street North, where they found the home fully engulfed in flames. The structure is a total loss, Hughes said.
The resident claimed he was not home when the fire started, Hughes said, but also told firefighters he attempted unsuccessfully to save the dog. The resident was not injured.
CFR Chief of Training Alan Lewis told The Dispatch Monday that the fire appears to have started in the front bedroom of the house. But the cause of the fire, including whether it was accidental, was not available since the fire is still under investigation.
