A Columbus High School student and his mother face misdemeanor charges after the student allegedly brandished a firearm Friday afternoon on campus.
Sherita Shunta Baker, 40, and the juvenile are both charged with simple assault with menace to create fear, and the juvenile is also charged with possessing a weapon on school property, according to a Columbus Police Department press release.
A fight between two male students took place at the football fieldhouse Friday afternoon, the press release said. One student’s mother picked him up after the fight, but the mother and son later returned to campus.
Witnesses said when another student said something to the juvenile suspect, he raised his shirt showing a gun.
A Columbus Municipal School District Facebook post acknowledging the incident said coaches quickly intervened and no one was hurt. Police responded at about 4:30 p.m.
Baker was booked in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. The student who was arrested will be processed through the juvenile court system.
