Northern Mississippi and some central parts of the state are getting a new area code.
The new area code, 471, will exist alongside the 662 area code, but it will not replace it, according to a Friday press release from the Mississippi Public Service Commission.
Existing phone numbers with the 662 area code will remain the same, but new customers or additional lines may be assigned the new area code once it becomes active. The new area code is expected to roll out in late 2025 or early 2026.
Areas affected will include the same geographic region currently served by the 662 area code. This includes counties in the Public Service Commission’s Northern District, including Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Clay counties, along with parts of the Central District, like Holmes, Sunflower and Yazoo counties.
The new area code is being added because the numbering resources for the 662 area code are expected to be exhausted by the third quarter of 2026, the release said.
