A morning assault at Mississippi State University’s campus and attempted escape from law enforcement officers has landed an Oktibbeha County man in jail.
MSU Police Chief Vance Rice said his officers were called to an assault near Giles Hall sometime after 9 a.m. Monday. Upon arriving, Rice said, officers saw Jeremy Young, 20, attempting to pull a female victim from a car. After getting her out, Young tried to flee, hitting a MSUPD patrol car in the process.
“He jumped into the vehicle and began to flee,” Rice said. “It was by the Giles building and that parking lot only had one exit, so he had to come back at the officer to get out of the lot. In doing so he hit our car, but he did manage to get by.”
Rice said Young led officers on a chase along Blackjack and Oktoc roads. Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office deputies joined on Artesia Road, he said, and arrested Young at his home on Carol Cotton Lane.
Young was booked into Oktibbeha County Jail on suspicion of simple domestic violence and failure to yield to blue lights. He was released after posting $1,000 bond Monday afternoon.
Rice said the female victim did not receive treatment at the hospital, and did not appear to have serious injuries. No one else was hurt in the assault or chase.
He also said the incident beginning on MSU’s campus should not be cause for greater alarm about safety at the university.
“Neither one was affiliated in any way with MSU,” he said. “We believe they are brother and sister, or at least relatives. Why they came here and stopped here, we don’t know.”
