The City of Columbus sent out a heat advisory for the city, effective Friday through Sunday.
Heat advisories are warnings issued by the National Weather Service to alert residents in areas where temperatures are expected to rise to dangerous temperatures.
Temperatures are projected to reach or surpass 99 degrees according to the advisory. The advisory also said the high humidity will make temperatures feel hotter.
The advisory provided the following health and safety tips to follow:
■ Stay hydrated by continuously drinking enough water, and try not to consume sugary, caffeinated or alcoholic drinks to avoid dehydration.
■ Avoid a lot of outdoor activity if possible by staying inside during the hours of the most heat (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Take constant breaks in shaded and cool areas if it is not possible to stay indoors.
■ Be conscious of clothing choices, and wear lightweight, loose, and light-colored clothing that helps to keep body temperature low.
■ Apply full-coverage sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect the skin from sun damage.
■ Take cool showers and baths, and use fans and air conditioning if possible to attain a cool body temperature.
■ Check that elderly relatives, neighbors and pets are avoiding overheating and dehydration.
■ Do not leave children and pets inside unattended vehicles to avoid rapidly increasing temperatures that can cause great injury or death.
■ Be conscious of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The warning signs for heat exhaustion are heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness and nausea, and the warning signs for heat stroke are high body temperature, confusion and loss of consciousness. If any warning signs of either arise, seek immediate medical attention.
