A flash fire injured two contract workers Thursday at SDI Biocarbon Solutions plant on Manufacturers Drive.
Jim Robbins, interim county fire services coordinator, said the contractors were vacuuming carbon dust when a spark caused the fire. The workers suffered burns and were airlifted out of the area for medical treatment, Robbins said.
Firefighters from the new Industrial Fire and Rescue Department responded just after 9 a.m., Robbins said, assisted by volunteers from Districts 4 and 5 and Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office personnel.
“The fire itself was knocked down fairly quick,” Robbins said, adding that carbon dust was still burning itself out at the facility as of Thursday evening. “… It’s possible static electricity caused the spark. … We don’t know yet.”
