A Columbus man was killed in a single-car crash that struck a column of the fence around Mississippi University for Women Wednesday night.
Johnny Kenyatta Elliott, 43, of Columbus, was identified as the driver by Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant in a Thursday text message to media outlets.
Merchant said Elliott was driving north on 15th Street at about 9 p.m. when his car left the road. Elliott was the only person in the vehicle during the accident, and no other cars were involved.
Merchant said the cause of the accident is still under investigation, though he believed Elliott may have lost control of the vehicle while crossing railroad tracks.
