Scott Colom and Cliff Johnson won Democratic primaries Tuesday for seats in the U.S. Senate and Mississippi’s House of Representatives, respectively, carrying Oktibbeha, Lowndes, Clay and Noxubee counties along the way.
In the Nov. 3 general election, Colom will face incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, while Johnson advances to challenge incumbent Rep. Trent Kelly.
Hyde-Smith earned 126,589 votes (80.8%) in the statewide Republican primary against a single opponent in the, according to results published by the Associated Press, while Colom earned 106,783 votes (73%) across the state in the three-candidate Democratic primary.
Primary election results, provided by the circuit clerk’s office of each respective county, remain unofficial until certified by the Secretary of State’s Office.
Colom secured votes from 4,160 (97.03%) Lowndes County voters, with opponents Albert Littell and Priscilla Till receiving less than 2.86% combined. In Oktibbeha County, Colom earned 2,892 votes (96.27%). Till received 83 votes (2.76%) and Littell earned 28 votes (0.93%).
Colom earned 2,500 votes (96.34) in Clay County, beating Till’s 55 votes (2.1%) and Littell’s 38 votes (1.46%). In Noxubee County, Colom earned 1,095 (96.90%) votes while Till earned 24 (2.12%) and Littell earned 11 (0.97%).
On the Republican side, Hyde-Smith earned 2,413 votes (88%) in Lowndes County, with challenger Sarah Adlakha managing 316 votes (11.52%). In Oktibbeha County, Hyde-Smith’s 1,543 votes (80.70%) beat Adlakha’s 351 votes (18.39%).
In Clay County, Hyde-Smith received 819 votes (91%) compared to Adlakha’s 79 votes (8.78%). Hyde-Smith won Noxubee County, as well, with 241 votes (93.77%) to Adlakha’s 16 votes (6.22%).
House races
Statewide, Johnson received 17,882 votes (63.6%) in the Democratic primary for the U.S. House of Representatives seat in the 1st Congressional District, while opponent Kelvin Buck received 10,240 votes (36.4%).
Johnson swept the vote in each of the Golden Triangle counties. In Lowndes County, he received 2,964 votes (72.87%) while Buck received 1,088 votes (26.75%). Johnson earned 92 votes (65.71%) in Oktibbeha County to beat Buck, who garnered 48 votes (34.28%).
In Clay County, Johnson’s 1,754 votes (70.30%) beat Buck’s 728 votes (29.18%).
Johnson will go on to face incumbent Rep. Trent Kelly on the November ballot. Kelly, running unopposed on the Republican ticket, received 2,606 votes in Lowndes County, 216 votes in Oktibbeha County and 853 votes in Clay County.
Running unopposed on the Democrat ticket for the U.S. House of Representatives seat in the 3rd Congressional District, Michael Chiaradio earned 2,123 votes in Oktibbeha County and 510 votes in Noxubee County.
Chiaradio will go on to face Republican incumbent Rep. Michael Guest, who ran unopposed in the primary. Guest earned 1,529 votes in Oktibbeha County, and 225 votes in Noxubee County.
