With a $150,000 donation from Huber Engineered Woods’ community engagement and philanthropy program, Huber Helps, two school districts near the HEW mill in Shuqualak can participate in Project Lead the Way STEM programming.
Huber’s plans to invest in local STEM education were first announced at the Shuqualak Mill groundbreaking ceremony in October in celebration of HEW’s sixth oriented strand board plant, which is set to employ 150 upon opening in 2026. Because the new mill will harness cutting-edge technology, the company is committed to investing in STEM education to ensure young people are well-equipped with the skills needed for future employment.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Kemper and Noxubee County educators and leaders to invest in the long-term success of the community through Huber Helps in partnership with Project Lead the Way,” Lea Volpe, Huber vice president for communications and community relations, said in a press release.
“Seeing the joy and appreciation expressed by the teachers firsthand was inspiring and reminded me of why it’s so wonderful to be a part of Huber.”
Funding of the PLTW grants allow for schools in Noxubee and Kemper counties to send local teachers to training in the summer so that programming can be implemented the next school year, according to the press release.
