A family gathering in the 300 block of Florence Street in East Columbus turned violent when tempers flared and left two injured early Monday morning, Columbus Police Chief Joseph Daughtry told The Dispatch.
Officers were called to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle at 1 a.m. Monday after two gunshot victims arrived by private vehicles.
Daughtry said in a CPD press release Terrence Maxwell was one of the victims and an alleged shooter.
“This is a mess,” Daughtry said in the press release. “… No one called us to the scene to investigate. At this time, we believe there was an argument during the family gathering, and Terrance Maxwell retrieved a gun from his car and shot into the crowd of persons there. One person was injured by being struck in the foot.”
Daughtry said another person at the gathering then shot Maxwell, who was taken from BMHGT to Jackson for additional treatment.
Daughtry did not have an update on Maxwell’s condition by press time. Police have not identified Maxwell’s shooter, he said.
“The family is not talking to us,” Daughtry said. “They’re not sure who was there, but we’re encouraging anyone with information to talk to us or use the P3 app to leave an anonymous tip and maybe get a reward.”
Shots fired hours later
Later Monday morning at approximately 5 a.m. another shooting occurred at a Sprint Mart in East Columbus, a CPD press release said.
Shots were fired into the building located at 732 Alabama St.
Daughtry said no one was struck, and investigators are awaiting video evidence to determine what happened.
Crawford shooting
Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Crawford around 12:30 a.m. Sunday for a shots-fired call.
A refrigerator was struck inside someone’s home as shots were fired into an occupied dwelling.
“The homeowner didn’t know anything, see anything, doesn’t know who would’ve done it,” Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said. “A round came through the window and struck the refrigerator. Nobody’s injured and no suspects.”
