Starkville’s Unity Park Committee will accept nominations for the 2022 Unity Park Honorees from Sept. 1 to Nov. 1.
The program began in 2018, when the first two honorees were chosen. Now eight people, who spent their lives working for civil rights and bringing unity to Oktibbeha County, have been honored.
Their names, which have been permanently etched on plaques at the Unity Park, are:
■ 2018 — Rosa Stewart and Sadye Wier
■ 2019 — Wilson Ashford and Adelaide Jeanette Elliott,
■ 2020 — Carole McReynolds Davis and Dorothy L. Bishop
■ 2021 — George W. Evans and Dr. Fenton Peters
Each honoree made a significant impact on their community. Now the Unity Park Committee is asking citizens to nominate others, who were devoted to making Oktibbeha County a more equitable and better place to live.
The committee will consider all nominees and will recommend up to two honorees to the Oktibbeha Board of Supervisors. The selected Honorees will be announced at a ceremony on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 17, 2022, at Unity Park.
Each nominee must have been a resident of Oktibbeha County. The individual must be deceased for five years or more; contributed to civil rights in Oktibbeha County and advanced unity in the county.
Nomination forms can be found online at the Unity Park website, starkvilleunitypark.com . The completed form can either be mailed to the Unity Park Committee, 108 Grand Ridge Rd., Starkville, MS 39759 or emailed to [email protected] .
