Each Columbus mayoral and city council candidate in this year’s May 7 primary and June 4 general election has confirmed they will be on hand for a community political forum sponsored by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Northeast Mississippi Chapter, First Vice President of Programs Jannette Adams said.
Mayoral candidates include incumbent Democrat Robert Smith, Republican Glenn Lautzenhiser and Independent Bo Jarrett.
Five-term incumbent Democrat Fred Stewart faces challengers Marty Turner and Maurice Webber in the race for the Ward 4 seat in the primary. Incumbent Kabir Karriem faces fellow Democrat Kenneth McFarland will face off for the Ward 5 seat. In Ward 6, incumbent Bill Gavin will face fellow Republican challenger Whirllie Byrd.
Smith will face Lautzenhiser and Jarett in the June 4 general election. Incumbent Ward 2 Alderman Joseph Mickens, a Democrat, will face Republican challenger Susan Mackay in the general election.
Ward 1 Councilman Gene Taylor and Ward 3 Councilman Charlie Box are running unopposed.
