From left, drummer Justin Klieber, guitarist and vocalist Lance Cooper and guitarist and vocalist Mike Meggs from The Moves band perform during their hour-long set Saturday afternoon on stage at Munson and Brothers sixth annual Oktoberfest. The band, which formed about 10 years ago, has played at nearly every Oktoberfest and enjoyed the chance to return this year, Cooper said. “It’s just a beautiful thing to see everybody come together and just enjoy each other and enjoy a good time,” he said. Thomas Easterling, left, the pronouncer for the Mississippi Spelling Bee, reads off the word “satrapy” to contestant and Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science English teacher Theo Hummer, right, who spelled the word correctly to win the championship round of the Adult Spelling Bee Saturday evening at Munson and Brothers Oktoberfest. The 12-person contest, which Friendly City Books hosted, raised $300 for the state bee. Throughout the six-round event, contestants used lifelines to either skip a word or phone a crowd member, which included former Mississippi competitors in the National Spelling Bee, Jessica Widodo and Baruni Jakkula. Amelia Martin, 9, draws a picture of a city landscape Saturday morning at the Mississippi University for Women’s Art and Design program’s booth on Third Street North outside Munson and Brothers Trading Post. The booth was one of 30 vendors at the festival selling handcrafted goods. The booth, which was also selling artwork in support of the university’s honorary art society Kappa Pi, offered festival goers a chance to create their own artwork and trade it in for another piece left by a different artist, Beverly Joyce MUW professor of Art History. Amelia is the daughter of Megan and Chris Martin. Braden Simmons/Dispatch Staff
Ryan Munson, owner of Munson and Brothers Trading Post, and Prost Master Brad Kidder raise a toast to the city of Columbus and all of the celebrators in attendance at Oktoberfest Saturday evening between musical performances on the eatery’s stage. Munson said that he felt the community gathering was something to be recognized because Columbus residents can often be too hard on the city, and its community should also recognize the good it’s doing. “The negativity is really loud, and I think that social media and those sorts of things are really good at amplifying negatives,” Munson said. “So when you’re in person and you’re together and you guys are having a good time, that’s the best time to start amplifying the positive. And when you get everybody together and you can see it’s all working together, it’s one of the best experiences.” Braden Simmons/Dispatch Staff
Amy Jo Kite, left, plays a drum and shaker while harmonizing with Kyle Kite, right, during the duo’s performance Saturday evening on stage at Munson and Brothers Trading Post. Kyle was one of the top three finishers who performed in September at Munson and Brothers Songwriter Contest and was invited to return for Oktoberfest along with the other two winners Earlie Grace Davis and Goodloe Chilcutt. Kyle said that he enjoyed performing and having his wife with him on stage Saturday because when they’re together, that’s really the “full act.” Braden Simmons/ Dispatch Staff
