STARKVILLE — Mississippi State junior wide receiver Chris Smith suffered a broken jaw in a weekend altercation in Meridian and will have surgery today.
Smith, a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder from Meridian, is expected to have surgery in Columbus, and isn”t expected to miss summer workouts, a team spokesman said Monday.
MSU coach Dan Mullen confirmed the incident happened Saturday night but declined comment on details of the incident.
“We”re still investigating all the events around what happened,” Mullen said.
It is unclear if any police charges were filed.
An attempt to obtain a police report from the Meridian Police Department was unsuccessful Monday night.
Smith had 24 catches for 264 yards and a touchdown last season. He caught 13 passes for 165 yards in MSU”s final three games.
