Starkville developer Mark Castleberry already has another project on his plate.
Coming soon to Starkville: 110 Mill, a mixed-use development on Mill Street. Castleberry purchased and tore down three houses behind Mugshots to make way for 45 high-end apartments and approximately 10,000 square feet of retail and office space. He added two of the houses had sat vacant for at least a decade.
Though still in the early phases, construction is expected to start early 2025.
“We just really believe in this market,” said Castleberry, who most recently completed the larger Triangle Crossing Development on Highway 12. “… We feel that good quality apartments and retail in this great area is only going to make this area better.”
Speaking of the Triangle Crossing development, the last two stores have officially opened. The development is at a full capacity with Starbucks and Verizon now welcoming customers.
Moving to the other side of town, Castleberry purchased the former Cadence Bank headquarters about a year ago. With exterior renovation and ongoing interior renovations the new Professional Park, 12183 Hwy. 182, is ready for tenants. Professional Park is about 36,000 square feet, half of which is already occupied by law offices, financial companies and more.
Castleberry said as he gains tenants, he makes the needed renovations to accommodate the incoming businesses. Along with the remaining 18,000 square feet for lease, he has a 4,800 square-foot warehouse for lease on the property. Interested tenants can reach out to Castle Properties for more information.
Moving over to Columbus, Southern Drugs is closing shop.
Southern Drugs, established in 1931, will close its doors permanently May 10. A press release from the pharmacy at 1202 Main Street announced the closure Wednesday and cited, “inadequate insurance reimbursements” as the main cause.
“For nearly a century, Southern Drugs has been committed to providing exceptional pharmacy services to the Columbus community,” the press release said. “In a move to uphold its dedication to customer care and service quality, Southern Drugs will be consolidating its services with the broader network of Family Pharmacy locations across Mississippi and Alabama.”
Southern Drugs transferred all customer prescriptions to the Donut Factory Pharmacy at 1214 Hwy. 45 N. Customers can reach pharmacist Carl Shirley and his team at the new location if they have any questions.
“Southern Drugs extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Columbus community for the trust and support shown over the decades,” the press release stated. “While this chapter comes to a close, the legacy of Southern Drugs and its commitment to health and wellness will continue to thrive through its other Mississippi and Alabama Family Pharmacy locations.”
I’d like to thank the downtown pharmacy for its service to patients over the years.
Also in town, another Family Dollar has announced its closure. Corporate headquarters did not respond to The Dispatch by press time. Family Dollar at 60 Mike Parra Road is the second Family Dollar to close since the company’s announcement earlier this year. Dollar Tree, which acquired Family Dollar stores a decade ago, announced more than 1,000 Family Dollar locations would close, but did not release a list. The press release said the first stores closing were targeted as being “under performing.”
