New Hope’ varsity boys golf team, which captured the Region 1-5A championship at Elm Lake Golf Course on Oct. 6, tees off in the 5A state championship at the same course at 9 a.m. Monday, looking to build upon last year’s third place finish.
The tournament wraps up on Tuesday.
Led by King Edge’s 76, which was the third-best score in the tournament, the Trojans carded a total score of 313 to outpace Lafayette’s 319 and Caledonia’s 323 for the region title. Cadence Forrester and Brayden Gerber tied for fourth with a 78. Lee Stockton shot an 81 for eighth, and Rhett Fleming finished with a 10th-place 83.
Boasting only one senior, Gerber, the Trojans are a fairly young team when it comes to age, but they pack much more experience than what meets the eye. Three of the Trojans have played in the state championship tournament, helping the team finish third last year.
“We really are showing a lot of just really impressive rounds, and our guys are showing a lot of growth,” head coach Angie Edge said. “It’s really exciting, not just for this year, of course we have high hopes for this year, but more than that we’re really excited about our years to come because we see that we have a lot of kids who are playing really, really well.”
New Hope is feeling good going into Monday’s action, especially since it’s being held on home turf. Elm Lake is the team’s home course, but it still offers a challenge.
“I’m hoping that it gives us a little bit of an advantage. Elm Lake can really have a bite when there’s wind in play, and there’s supposed to be good wind on both Monday and Tuesday,” Angie said. “Our golfers know how to handle wind, so we’re hoping that will give us an advantage. The thing we just stress to them over and over is, we just want them to go out and play their game. They know how to play. We need to treat this just like every other tournament and just go out and do what we do, and we hope that’s win. But even if not, we want to go out and do our best.”
