It was another blowout win and another dominant defensive effort for Mississippi State on Sunday as the Bulldogs blew out Jacksonville 80-35 at the WBCA Showcase in Orlando, Florida.
Sophomore Quanirah Montague led MSU (6-0) with a career-high 17 points in just 14 minutes off the bench. Jerkaila Jordan had her second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals, while Eniya Russell and Madina Okot were also in double figures.
The story, as it has been throughout the year so far, was the Bulldogs’ defense. The Dolphins’ leading scorer, Edyn Battle, made just one of her 16 field goal attempts, and as a team Jacksonville was 1-for-18 from behind the arc. MSU out-rebounded the Dolphins 57-27, including 20-8 on the offensive boards. That led to a 20-4 advantage in second-chance points and a 50-18 margin in paint points.
Jacksonville (3-3) missed 15 of 16 shots during one stretch that lasted from the end of the first quarter until early in the third. MSU won the third quarter 27-7, continuing a trend of controlling the proceedings after halftime.
The Bulldogs are allowing just 42.2 points per game and have held their last five opponents under 50 points. All six of MSU’s opponents have made less than 30 percent of their shots from the floor.
The road trip continues for the Bulldogs, who head to the Cayman Islands for two games over Thanksgiving weekend. MSU will face Utah on Thursday and South Florida on Friday.
