COLUMBUS – It was a spooky night for the New Hope Trojans as the West Point Green Wave handed them their first district loss of the season, 38-7, in a Halloween matchup.
The Green Wave’s offense dominated the game and scored five touchdowns in the first three quarters while their defense held the Trojans to zero points until the final two minutes.
West Point started the game with Quentin Thompson finding the end zone on the first drive. The Trojans then fumbled the ball, allowing the Green Wave to score their next seven points. It was a quick four-and-out for New Hope and within minutes the Green Wave offense was back in the end zone, finishing off the first quarter with a 21-point lead over New Hope.
Things started to look less scary for the Trojans as the second quarter began when they forced West Point to punt. New Hope gained momentum, but were just short of a first down and had to give up possession yet again.
New Hope head coach Allen Glenn said he was disappointed in his team for the lack of offensive time they had due to the quick offensive possessions
“We turned it over way too many times to be able to play with a program like West Point,” Glenn said. “I didn’t think we came out and executed how we needed to execute to be able to play in a big-time game.”
West Point scored their fourth touchdown of the night just before the end of the second quarter and headed into halftime with a 28-0 lead.
Coming back from an explosive first half, West Point scored their fifth and final touchdown with 10:05 left on the clock of the third quarter. The mercy rule was put in play and it was a running clock for the remainder of the game when the score hit 35-0. The Green Wave would add a field goal toward the end of the quarter and entered the final 12 minutes with a 38-point lead.
New Hope quarterback Tyrekus Brooks finally got the Trojans in position to score but the Green Wave forced a sack followed by a quarter-ending interception.
But New Hope didn’t quit, keeping West Point off the scoreboard for the final 22 minutes of game action
“Our defensive guys stepped up,” Glenn said. “They made stops when they needed to make stops.”
Going into the fourth quarter, spirits were low until the 2:05 mark when sophomore quarterback Drew Glenn found Jack Moore down the field for a touchdown to end the night with a score of 38-7.
“I’m so proud of those young guys getting an opportunity to come in and get some reps executing,” Glenn said. “We’ll need those guys in the future.”
New Hope will travel to Caledonia next week to face their cross-county rival before they head to playoffs. With a big game coming up, Glenn said he knows that it is time for his team to lock in and execute each and every play.
“We just got to limit mistakes,” Glenn said. “Be who we are and come ready to work on Monday.”
