COLUMBUS — The West Lowndes Panthers found themselves overwhelmed by mistakes and missed opportunities on Friday night, leading to a 42-12 loss against the Vardaman Rams.
Despite showing flashes of promise, the Panthers struggled to maintain consistency, hampered by turnovers and costly penalties that allowed Vardaman to pull away early and never look back.
The game started with a glimmer of hope for the Panthers, as they received the ball after a squib kick from Vardaman. But after advancing to the 30-yard line, a block-in-the-back penalty set West Lowndes back. Despite gaining a first down, they were unable to convert on fourth down, handing the ball back to Vardaman, who quickly capitalized with a 34-yard quarterback run for a touchdown, putting the Rams up 13-0 midway through the first quarter.
West Lowndes attempted to regain their footing on the next drive, moving the ball to the 44-yard line. However, their drive was cut short by a fumble that Vardaman recovered, marking the first of several costly turnovers for the Panthers. Vardaman pushed their lead further with a 45-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter with a successful two-point conversion to boot, making it 21-0.
The Panthers responded with their first scoring drive, fueled by big runs from Jonivan Edwards and Kam Evans. After a 28-yard gain by Evans, West Lowndes punched it in on an 8-yard run to make it 21-6 with 7:08 remaining in the second quarter. However, a missed two-point conversion kept them from gaining more momentum.
Just as West Lowndes seemed to be finding its rhythm, Vardaman marched down the field and scored again within two minutes, extending the lead to 27-6. The Panthers answered with another strong kickoff return and a series of solid runs, culminating in a second touchdown before the half to cut the deficit to 27-12.
“I saw a team that laid down (after the first half),” West Lowndes head coach Anthony King said. “We started off from behind and gave up on our passing defense (which) gives us problems.”
The second half proved just as frustrating for West Lowndes. They opened the third quarter with a drive into Vardaman territory, but a holding penalty wiped out a big run that could have shifted the momentum. Forced into a turnover on downs, the Panthers regained possession after a Vardaman fumble but failed to capitalize. A fumbled pass by West Lowndes on their next possession was recovered by Vardaman, who scored their fifth touchdown of the night with 1:16 left in the third quarter.
West Lowndes opened the fourth quarter with a 52-yard run from Evans, but a fumble gave the ball back to Vardaman, and the Rams quickly drove into the red zone. Though West Lowndes intercepted a pass, a defensive pass interference call gave Vardaman another chance, and they scored again on a 3-yard run, increasing their lead to 40-12.
The Panthers’ troubles continued as a fumble on second down pinned them at their own 1-yard line. On the following play, West Lowndes was tackled in the end zone for a safety, pushing the score to 42-12. Vardaman ran down the clock from there securing the decisive victory.
King said he hopes to move on from this loss as he addresses his team’s needs moving forward.
“We did not play physical,” King said. “We have to go back to the drawing board. I thought we were much more physical than what we showed tonight. We have to play smart ball and we did not.”
The Panthers will look to regroup as they prepare for their next game versus Okolona, hoping to correct the errors that plagued them and get back on track in the next weeks to come.
