COLUMBUS — In a decisive performance, West Lowndes secured a 52-9 victory over Tupelo Christian Preparatory School, capitalizing on early turnovers and maintaining control throughout the game.
The Panthers gained an advantage from the start after TCPS fumbled the opening kickoff. West Lowndes quickly took the lead with a 27-yard touchdown run by wide receiver Dylan Gardner just 30 seconds into the first quarter. TCPS responded with a drive to the 24-yard line, where they converted a fourth-down pass into a touchdown with 9:11 remaining in the quarter.
After the score, a failed onside kick attempt by TCPS gave West Lowndes favorable field position. Three plays later, the Panthers scored on a 35-yard rushing touchdown, taking an early lead.
After TCPS failed to advance on their next drive, a desperation pass was intercepted by West Lowndes, giving them another scoring opportunity. Despite a fumbled snap, the Panthers scored again on a quarterback keeper from the 1-yard line, extending their lead to 24-7 by the end of the first quarter.
Despite the easy win, Panthers head coach Anthony King wasn’t pleased with the execution, particularly in the first half where West Lowndes was flagged for 10 false start penalties.
“We were real sloppy,” King said. “We have to get better after having too many flags. We have
to get our center better about (the cadences).”
West Lowndes continued to pressure TCPS in the second quarter, as Kam Evans fought through multiple defenders to secure a first down, followed by a 33-yard run from Gardner. This set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Evans, though a false start penalty forced them to come up short on the 2-point conversion attempt.
TCPS struggled to find consistency and, on another desperation pass, threw their second interception of the game. West Lowndes capitalized on the turnover with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Gardner on fourth down, increasing their lead to 38-6 with 6:40 left in the half.
TCPS was dealt another blow in the second quarter when starting quarterback Jeb Brown left the game with an injury and was replaced by backup Drew Dickey. The sophomore signal-caller faced immediate pressure from the Panthers’ pass rush.
A fumble by TCPS on the following play gave possession back to West Lowndes, who scored again with a 3-yard touchdown run by Evans, ending the half with a comfortable lead.
The second half began with a running clock. A 12-yard rush by Evans added another touchdown early in the third quarter, though a botched snap left the 2-point conversion incomplete. TCPS advanced into West Lowndes territory but was unable to score as the Panthers’ defense continued its strong showing. In the fourth quarter, TCPS managed a safety after sacking the West Lowndes quarterback in the endzone. However, any possible momentum was short-lived.
Following the kickoff, TCPS fumbled again, giving the ball back to West Lowndes. After penalties pushed the Panthers back to their own 33-yard line, they took a knee to close out the game.
“It was a good win,” King said. “We have to win to stay in, so next week we will play smarter and play with a little bit more discipline to just keep winning.”
The Panthers’ defense held firm throughout the game, securing a move into the 2nd round of the playoffs where they’ll face Strayhorn, the No. 1 seed from Region 3-1A.
