What started off as a promising season for West Lowndes’ boys basketball team ended Tuesday in solemn fashion as the Panthers closed out their season with a 64-44 loss at Calhoun City in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs.
“We played hard, we just came out just a little bit flat in the beginning,” head coach Michael Huffman said.” … I like how we played tough to end the game and fought back, we just never could get control of it. Our guard play was just a little shaky at the beginning and that cost us a little bit, but I’m very proud with how we played. Calhoun City has a very good team and hopefully we can learn from our experience with the guys we have coming back and improve.”
West Lowndes fell behind early and trailed 37-22 at halftime, mostly due to committing 21 turnovers, which Huffman said was just far too many errors to come back from.
“That sealed the deal on us a little bit,” he said. “We fought back, I was proud of the way we fought back, but great teams are not going to come back from 21 turnovers… I was really pleased with Anquarius Outlaw, my point guard. He came back tough in the second and third quarter. We actually outscored them in the third quarter by a pretty good distance and got our confidence back. I was pleased with the way he played. I was very pleased with Eli Sanders, Maurice Hill and Tyrone Scales, the guys who started the game along with Traylen Jefferson. The starters fought back in the third quarter pretty good.”
The Panthers ended their season at 19-10 overall but on a six-game losing streak.
West Lowndes’ girls basketball team also saw its season come to a close on Tuesday in the first round. Vardaman got the better of the Panthers, 42-31. The team ends its season 13-18 overall.
