STARKVILLE — The Tupelo Golden Wave capped off their regular season in dramatic fashion, holding off the Starkville Yellow Jackets to preserve their undefeated record.
In a game with playoff seeding on the line, Starkville looked to clinch a home playoff game but Tupelo’s defensive resilience and timely scores ultimately sealed a hard-fought victory.
After Tupelo deferred the coin toss, Starkville took possession first by recovering their own muffed kickoff. Their drive down the field was short lived as Tupelo’s Iverson McCoy intercepted a Jaylen Ruffin pass near the 35 yard line.
Tupelo quickly shifted into gear, with running back Jaeden Hill—a Mississippi State commit—breaking loose for what appeared to be a 66-yard touchdown run until an illegal block penalty called it back. Starkville held strong, picking off Tupelo to regain possession and sending the game into the second quarter scoreless.
Tupelo finally broke through in the second. Quarterback Noah Gillon led a steady drive that set up Hill for a short 3-yard touchdown run putting Tupelo up 7-0. But Starkville was not ready to back down.
A 50-yard kickoff return sparked their offense, and they moved the ball deep into Tupelo territory. Running back Abrayln Jenkins punched in a 27-yard rushing touchdown, and Tyson Knox powered through on the two-point attempt to give Starkville an 8-7 lead late in the first half.
After halftime, Tupelo came out swinging. Hill took charge, barreling through Starkville’s defense for a long touchdown run followed by a two-point conversion that put the Golden Wave back on top, 15-8. Starkville’s ensuing drive was hindered by penalties and a sack, forcing them to punt, and Tupelo wasted no time. Hill struck again, this time catching a pass for another score, stretching Tupelo’s lead to 22-8.
Starkville showed grit, pushing deep into Tupelo’s end before a last-ditch Ruffin pass was intercepted by JD Wise. As the third quarter ended, Tupelo’s offense controlled the clock, leaving Starkville with limited time to rally.
Early in the fourth, Starkville went for it on a crucial fourth down, but an incomplete pass turned the ball over to Tupelo at the 30-yard line. Gillon orchestrated a sharp drive, hitting his receivers and setting up Braylon Matthews for a jet-sweep touchdown, extending the lead to 29-8 with under seven minutes to play. Starkville managed one more touchdown on a pass to A’Ravion Moore-Gladney, but their two-point attempt failed, and Tupelo recovered the onside kick to run out the clock.
After the hard-fought game, Starkville head coach Chris Jones acknowledged his team’s effort and resilience, even in defeat.
“The kids played hard,” Jones said. “It’s not the result that we wanted, but at the end of the day we are in the playoffs. We have to fix our focus on the future.”
The penalties stacked up for both teams in the loss for Starkville and gave Tupelo second chances that led to scoring drives. Jones knows the Jackets will have to fix these issues going forward as they head into the playoffs.
“We have got to get back to the details,” Jones said. “If we don’t fix it, it will pile up and we will get beat like we did tonight. Hopefully we will fix it and get better going forward.”
With this win, Tupelo finishes the season undefeated with their sights set on a state title. Starkville, though falling short, heads into the postseason battle-tested, ready to make noise on the road, where they will face 1-7A’s Horn Lake next Friday..
