COLUMBUS — The Columbus Christian Academy Rams girls basketball team saw its Class of 2025 win its 99th varsity game on Wednesday night.
The team is now 19-8 this season after a 51-22 win over Lee Academy on Wednesday, taking them to the North Regional semifinals against Calhoun Academy. The ultimate goal includes getting that 100th win, but only to keep their hopes of a state championship alive.
“We need about five more wins to be really happy,” head coach Billy Thomas said with a laugh. “As nice as it would be to get 100 wins, the state championship is always the goal.”
Calhoun defeated Hebron Christian 44-41 on Tuesday to set up the Friday matchup against the Rams. The winner will play on Saturday against either Marvell Academy or Delta Academy in the championship game.
The Rams won the previous matchup at Calhoun in a tight 49-46 contest, but this is also a rematch of a playoff matchup from a year ago when the Rams won in the first round of the North Regional tournament.
“They’re very athletic, a very talented young team,” Thomas said. “If we have an advantage over Calhoun, obviously along with playing at home, it’s that we’ve been here before. They’re young, but we still have to play basketball. Everyone gets up for these games, and we beat them last year so I know they’ll come at us with everything they’ve got.”
The Rams are hoping to reclaim the Class 2A state championship after losing in the Final Four a year ago. There’s still a ways to go, but with a senior class closing in on 100 wins, there is plenty of confidence in their ability to add another ring to their collections.
“In the past when the lights get brighter and the crowd gets bigger, it gets big at this point, and being able to know what it’s like to be there is so valuable,” Thomas said. “Now it’s time to go out and just play the game.”
