No. 1 Auburn did not trail Wednesday night against Ole Miss and shot nearly 60% from the field in a 106-76 win over the Rebels at Neville Arena. It’s the third-straight loss for Ole Miss (19-9, 8-7 SEC).
The Tigers (26-2, 14-1) hit 11 of 21 shots from behind the 3-point line and outrebounded Ole Miss 33-20 in the game. Auburn had 20 assists to just eight turnovers.
Auburn started the game 6 for 6 from the field and shot 61% overall in the first half, helping the Tigers to lead by as many as 22 in the first half. Ole Miss cut the Tigers’ lead down to eight with three-and-a-half minutes left in the first half after hitting five-straight shots, the last a 3-pointer from senior guard Matthew Murrell, who scored 10 first-half points.
A 3-pointer from senior guard Sean Pedulla got Ole Miss within six with 2:09 to play, but a floater by Auburn’s Tahaad Pettiford with less than three seconds left put the Tigers ahead by 10 at halftime. Pedulla led the Rebels with 11 points in the first half.
Auburn hit its first five shots of the second half and increased its back up to 20 midway through the period. The Tigers held Ole Miss without a made 3-pointer in the second half and held Murrell and Pedulla to a combined five second-half points. Tigers star Johni Broome led all scorers with 24 points. Five Rebels finished in double-figure scoring, led by Pedulla’s 14.
Ole Miss hosts Oklahoma on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
