The number of teams in the Golden Triangle region still competing for a volleyball state title was cut in half on Tuesday night.
Just two teams remain after Starkville and West Lowndes were eliminated from the Mississippi High School Activities Association playoffs, both in straight sets, bringing their seasons to an unfortunate end.
The Yellow Jackets traveled to play Lewisburg in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs, losing 16-25, 10-25, 10-25, Starkville finished its season with an 8-24-1 overall record.
West Lowndes, after winning its first-round match, traveled to play Tupelo Christian Prep, losing 5-25, 7-25, 11-25. The Panthers finished 8-8 overall in what was a historic season for them, hosting a playoff game for the first time in school history.
The remaining Golden Triangle teams both play Thursday, with Caledonia headed to face Newton County in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs, and New Hope traveling to play Corinth in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
