Members of the Starkville Swim Team continued to improve their times against tough competition during the John Servati Invitational in Tupelo from May 30-June 1.
14-year-old Timur Gabitov won first place in the 13-and-over boys 200-meter breaststroke event. Gabitov also earned third place finishes in the 400-meter individual medley and the 100-meter butterfly. Other top finishers include Effia Wu, who finished third in the 13-and-over girls 100-meter breaststroke, Cooper Koehn, who picked up a pair of thirds in the 10-and-under boys 50-meter breaststroke and 100-meter breaststroke and Keira Moss, who raced to third in the 10-and-under girls 100-meter butterfly.
By virtue of his time in the 100-meter butterfly, Gabitov qualified for selection to the zone team, a group of up to 24 Mississippi swimmers who travel, train and compete together against other regional zones teams. Evalyn Wu also qualified for the zone meet based on her short course times this season. This summer’s meet is in Orlando, Florida.
Starkville Swim will next compete at the Dick Fadgen Invitational in Memphis from June 20-22. Coach Melissa Hubley said the team will send 14 swimmers to the regional meet.
“We’re looking forward to more fast swims and team building,” Hubley said.
