MADISON — Germantown got a key district win at home.
Behind the pitching of Ty Ramage, the Mavericks were able to hold off Starkville, 2-1, at The Ranch in a key Region 2-7A contest on Tuesday night.
Germantown (10-9, 2-3 Region 2-7A) and the Yellowjackets (11-8, 2-3) will meet again at Starkville on Friday night at 7 p.m.
“Ty has stepped up and has taken the role of being our No. 1 starter with our normal top guy being out with an injury,” said Germantown coach Chris Peden. “We’ve won his last three starts, so we know we have a really good chance when he gets the ball.”
All of Germantown’s runs came in the first inning.
Brooks Hardy hit an RBI infield single to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead and two batters later John Riley North had an RBI fielder’s choice to give Germantown a 2-0 lead.
Starkville’s lone run came in the top of the fifth as Tyson Knox drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The Mavericks had chances to extend their lead in the fifth with two runners in scoring position with no outs, but Starkville relief pitcher Lucian Walker got a fly out, strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
The Yellow Jackets also had their chances to tie the game in both the sixth and seventh innings with two outs, but two fly outs ended the threat. Germantown left eight runners on base, while Starkville left seven runners on base.
Ty Ramage, a Hinds Community College signee, got the win on the mound for Germantown tossing six innings scattering three hits, one run and two walks while recording six strikeouts.
“My fastball was getting in on the hitters’ hands, so I got to live off my fast ball which I like to do,” Ramage said. “Getting those two runs early was big because it’s easy to go out and pitch. We needed this win at home because now if we win Friday it puts us in a really good spot.”
Brayden Quick had two hits to lead the Mavericks offensively.
“We left some runners on base that could’ve made a difference, but we did a great job of pitching and playing defense. It was a good high school baseball game,” Peden said. “Starkville is a really good team and don’t beat themselves, so it’s going to be tough going up there Friday.”
Knox (1-2) took the loss on the mound for Starkville.
“Our Achilles’ heel this year is runners left on base. Coming up with that big hit with two outs is something we’re battling and needing to get over that hump,” said Starkville coach Mark Monaghan. “Ramage did a great job of pounding the zone and keeping us off-balance. Our district is a gauntlet, and wins are at a premium so we got to respond and take care of business Friday.”
