After a surprising upset Friday night, the Starkville High baseball team couldn’t quite complete the storybook ending.
Madison Central, rated the No. 2 high school baseball team in the country earlier this month by Baseball America, defeated Starkville 19-1 in five innings in Saturday’s winner-take-all Game 3 in the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs.
After the Yellow Jackets struck first with a run in the top of the first, Madison Central put the game away early with 12 runs in the bottom frame. Madison Central scored a run in all four innings it batted.
The Yellow Jackets, who gave Madison Central only its second loss of the season Friday, collected three hits while allowing 11 hits.
