STARKVILLE — Starkville Academy had its hands busy in athletics this week, hosting two camps for elementary-aged students.
Along with a co-ed summer soccer camp, the Volunteers are hosting a three-day football camp concluding on Thursday morning.
The camp was open to rising first through sixth grade students, held on campus from 10:30 a.m.-noon daily.
“Building relationships with younger kids and giving them an opportunity to experience football before they reach pee wee and junior high is important,” SA head football coach Chase Nicholson said.
Nicholson, along with help from assistant Junior Graham and a number of current varsity players, have been running the show.
Nicholson said elementary camp marked the first football experience for a number of current SA varsity players, a trend he hopes will continue moving forward.
“They get to meet varsity players and coaches and experience the passion that we all have for a sport that we love,” Nicholson said. “I met some of my varsity players for the first time, many years ago, at elementary camp. We remember those times. Hopefully giving young kids a chance to learn this great game will light a fire in them for this game. If not, we all got to hang out with some really cool young kids.”
