SOUTHAVEN — Chris Wright ran for more than 100 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns Friday night to help the Southaven High School football team pull away for a 35-7 victory against Columbus in a Class 6A, Region 1 game.
Southaven led 14-7 at halftime and into the fourth quarter before it scored three times in the final frame, including an interception return off a pass by quarterback Trace Lee.
Columbus scored on the opening drive of the game on a 1-yard run by Cedric Jackson. But the Falcons (4-2, 1-1 region) turned the ball over on three of its first five possessions in the second half.
Byerson Cockrell and Jimmy Cockrell had interceptions for Columbus, which has 14 interceptions this season.
n Central Academy 16, Russell Christian 14: At Macon, Cole Newman hit Drew Pearson with a two-point conversion with 9 minutes, 40 seconds to go in regulation and the defense did the rest to help the Vikings improve to 7-0 and 5-0 in the division.
Newman scored on a 7-yard run to tie the game to set up the winning play. He opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 15-yard run. T.J. Coleman added the scoring run.
Coleman had eight carries for 32 yards, Newman had 21 carries for 24 yards, and Pearson and two carries for 22 yards.
Newman was 3 of 9 for 41 yards. Pearson had two catches for 31 yards. Will Thomas had one catch for 10 yards.
Pearson had 14 tackles and two fumble recoveries, Redmon Butler had eight tackles, including three for loss, and Cody Brown had seven tackles.
Central Academy will go on the road next week to play at North Sunflower. North Sunflower entered the week as the division’s only other unbeaten team.
