After a grueling 10-inning game, the Rebels’ first-ever trip to the Women’s College World Series ended Friday night with a loss to 16th-seeded Oregon.
Ole Miss battled back from a three-run deficit in the seventh inning to force extra innings, but the Rebels ultimately lost 6-5. Oregon drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning to eliminate the Rebels.
Jaden Pone led the game off for Ole Miss by reaching on an error and advanced to third base on a stolen base and then a wild pitch. Persy Llamas brought her in to score on a two-out single to put Ole Miss on top after half an inning.
But Oregon had an immediate response. Oregon put a pair of runners on base, and the Ducks plated both on a Dezianna Patmon single.
Both teams’ pitchers settled down after that, as neither team scored again until the fifth inning. The Rebels’ Brianna Lopez gave up three earned runs on six hits, two walks and a strikeout before getting pulled in the fifth. Aside from Miali Guachino facing one batter, it was Aliyah Binford in the circle the rest of the way, and she allowed zero earned runs and struck out seven in five innings.
Llamas came up with another timely knock in the fifth. She singled Pone home from third again to tie the game for the Rebels.
But just like the first inning, Oregon answered immediately. The Ducks doubled to lead off the inning, and an error helped them plate a run. Oregon went on to score two more runs in the frame to take a 5-2 lead.
Down to its last three outs, Ole Miss rallied in the seventh. The Rebels loaded the bases and pushed a run across on a fielder’s choice. Jamie Mackay then tied the game on a two-RBI single. Oregon couldn’t score in the bottom half, so the game went to extra innings.
Neither team scored in the eighth and ninth innings, and Ole Miss stranded a pair of runners in the top of the 10th. A couple singles and an Ole Miss error helped Oregon load the bases, and the Ducks finally ended the game with a walk-off walk.
