STARKVILLE — Two days after a historic victory against then-No. 8 LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the accolades kept rolling in for Mississippi State on Monday.
For the fourth week in a row, MSU had a representative when the Southeastern Conference’s weekly awards were announced. This time, two Bulldogs were honored.
Junior quarterback Dak Prescott, who also earned Athlon’s National Player of the Week Award, was named the SEC’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week with Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper, while MSU’s Ben Beckwith was named the league’s Offensive Lineman of the Week.
For Beckwith, a former walk-on from Benton Academy in Yazoo County, the award was the first of his career. It comes after the senior helped the offensive line carve up LSU defensive front to the tune of 302 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Beckwith is the first former walk-on to win the award. The Benton native was credited with five knockdown blocks in the 34-29 win. He was part of a line that helped MSU post a season-high 570 yards of total offense, the most given up by a LSU team under coach Les Miles.
For Prescott, the awards keep coming. A day after receiving his second national award of the season — he also was honored by the Manning Award in Week 2 — the Haughton, Louisiana, native added his first conference honor of the season following a 373-yard, three touchdown performance. Prescott was 15 of 22 for 268 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 105 yards and a score.
The redshirt junior scored two of his touchdowns, a 56-yard run and a 74-yard pass to wide receiver Jameon Lewis, in a critical four-minute stretch in the third quarter that saw MSU turn a 17-10 lead into a 31-10 advantage.
Through four games, Prescott has thrown 936 yards and 11 touchdowns. He had 10 touchdown passes last season. He is also sixth in the SEC with 378 rushing yards. His 15 total touchdowns leads the conference.
