PETAL — Starkville Academy football improved to 2-0 on the season in Petal on Thursday night, defeating Escambia Academy (Ala.), 39-20.
The Volunteers, who edged out Lamar School in last week’s season opener, scored their most points in a game since last season’s regular season finale at Washington Academy, a 39-21 win.
Starkville Academy returns to Starkville next week for a rematch of its first round Midsouth Association of Independent Schools Class 5A playoff matchup against Leake Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
Last season, the Rebels dominated the Vols on the road in a 41-7 win.
Sharkey-Issaquena Academy 58, Hebron Christian 0
PHEBA — Hebron Christian lost its season opener at home against Sharkey-Issaquena Academy on Friday, 58-0.
The Eagles (0-1) have now lost 13 consecutive games dating back to the 2020 season (Hebron didn’t field a team in 2021). Hebron allowed 50 or more points to its opponents three times in 2022.
Hebron will host Northeast Baptist (La.) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Central Holmes Christian 38, Oak Hill Academy 28
LEXINGTON — Oak Hill Academy lost its season opener against Central Holmes Christian on the road on Friday night, 38-28.
This is now the fifth-straight season opening game that the Raiders (0-1) have lost, and their second-straight loss against CHC. On a positive note, OHA has scored 28 points or more in each of its last five games against the Trojans overall.
Oak Hill returns home for its home opener against Marshall Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
