The Mississippi School for Math & Science boys soccer team won another intense Class 1A, Region 1 match in extra periods Tuesday night, defeating Vardaman 2-1 at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex.
In an evenly played match, Vardaman took a 1-0 lead in the first half. Nicholas Djedjos provided the equalizer for MSMS on a penalty kick, and regulation ended 1-1.
Sawyer Levenson scored off a free kick in the first half of extra periods to provide the winner for the Blue Waves.
MSMS goalkeeper James Talamo made two saves, and keeper Gordon Welch had one save to preserve the victory.
“The team showed integration tonight,” coach Armando Leyva said. “It was hard to tell we were coming back from a two-week break. The boys faced this match with a clear game plan and stuck to it even after being scored against first. I was pleased with great discipline, teamwork and selflessness from the entire team.”
The MSMS boys improved to 5-1, 4-1 in the region.
The MSMS girls fell to Vardaman 3-0, falling to 4-4 and 1-4.
The Blue Waves return to action Thursday night at district-leading Amory.
Girls basketball
Starkville 51, Grenada 41: Nakeria Scales scored 14 points as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Chargers in a Class 6A, Region 1 game.
Zariyah Edwards added 10 points for Starkville, which raced to a 28-14 halftime lead.
The Jackets evened their record at 7-7, 1-1 in Class 6A, Region 1.
Columbus Christian 54, Hebron Christian 28: Faith Yeates and Morgan Whitten were dominant as the Rams rolled past the Eagles.
Yeated poured in a game-high 25 points, while Whitten added 20 as CCA improved to 10-2. It was the second victory over Hebron Christian for Columbus Christian, which opened the season with a 57-30 win over the Eagles.
Boys basketball
Starkville 90, Grenada 80: Makhi Myles poured in 29 points to lead four players in double figures for the Yellow Jackets.
Connor Rogers scored 24 points, Kylan Baggett contributed 18, and Senavion Roby chipped in with 10 for Starkville, which improved to 13-3 overall and 1-1 in 6A-1.
Columbus Christian 58, Hebron Christian 23: Jackson Howard scored all 19 of his points during the first half as the Rams rolled to their first district win after two defeats.
Jacob Minga scored 16 points, and Drake Shaw added 11 for Columbus Christian, which is 8-6 overall and 1-2 in MAIS 2A-1.
