Marquez Shelton’s 56-yard touchdown run with 4:49 left in the fourth quarter lifted the West Lowndes High School football team to a 28-22 win over Sebastopol on Friday night in Columbus.
Shelton scored two other touchdowns for the Panthers (3-2, 2-0 Class 1A-3), catching a 35-yard pass from Fred Rice to open the scoring with 1:27 left in the first quarter and running 25 yards for a score earlier in the fourth. Rice connected with Shelton for the 2-point conversion after that score.
Rice completed 8 of 13 passes for 144 yards for West Lowndes, while JaQuavious Tate led the ground game with 144 yards on 16 carries. Shelton rushed for 93 yards on eight carries.
Joshua Franklin caught three passes for 50 yards, while Shelton led West Lowndes in receiving yards with 71.
Cameron Blair recorded 10 solo tackles for the Panthers, including one for a loss, while Richod Hill had an interception for West Lowndes’ only takeaway.
It was the first region game for Sebastopol, which is 2-3 overall.
Next up for West Lowndes is a trip to Carthage to continue district play against Leake County (0-4).
Oak Hill 24, Kirk 13: Cameron Dill completed 21 of 34 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown as the Raiders evened their record at 3-3 in West Point.
Dill also rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries for Oak Hill, which is 2-0 in MAIS Class 4A District 1. Brian Buchanan led Oak Hill with nine receptions for 71 yards. Conner Freeman caught a TD pass among his three catches for 32 yards.
The Raiders hit the road Friday to face North Delta (1-5, 0-2 Class 4A-1) in Batesville.
Victory Christian 32, New Life Christian 26: Quarterback Camron Henley rushed for 311 yards and 3 touchdowns and passed for 129 yards and 2 TDs as the Eagles posted their first win of the season in Columbus.
Henley completed 9 of 20 passes for VCA (1-2, 1-2 CFA), six of them to Kayden Barksdale for 83 yards and a touchdown and two to Jeremiah Smith for 45 yards and a score. Henley was a workhorse on offense, totaling 34 carries for the Eagles.
On defense, Matthew Moore made 4 tackles (2 for losses) and a 7-yard sack, while Logan Clements led VCA with 5 tackles. Barksdale also recorded a sack, for 8 yards, and made 3 tackles-for-loss, while Zac Carr posted 2 sacks.
New Life Christian fell to 0-4.
The challenge gets tougher this week for VCA, which will entertain Tuscaloosa Christian (4-2), which is coming off of a 44-42 loss to Tabernacle Christian and which earlier this season scored 70 points against New Life Christian.
DeSoto (Ark.) 52, Columbus Christian 6: Beau Kemp’s 34-yard run during the second quarter was the only scoring for the Rams, who fell behind 30-0 after the first quarter and fell to 2-4.
Kemp finished with 71 yards rushing, while McCory Humphries added 32 yards. Quarterbacks Drake Shaw and Luke Phillips each threw an interception, while Shaw made 3.5 tackles on defense.
The second half was played with a running clock.
The Rams will be at home Friday looking for their first win in MAIS Class 2A-1 play against Humphreys Academy (3-2, 1-2).
Aliceville (Ala.) 39, Pickens County (Ala.) 22: The Aliceville offense overwhelmed Pickens County while the defense posted a second-half shutout as the Yellow Jackets won their third consecutive game.
Aliceville averaged more than 10 yards per carry. Jeremiah Brewer needed just three carries to total 86 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown run that gave the Yellow Jackets a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, while Jermaine Brewer led Aliceville with 126 yards rushing.
Landon Ball returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown. TyJarian Williams threw three touchdown passes for Aliceville, a 14-yarder to Jermaine Brewer and 17-yard and 30-yard strikes to TyQuan Simon. Jermaine Brewer threw a 24-yard pass to Landon Ball to open the scoring. The Jackets racked up 415 yards of total offense to 238 for the Tornadoes.
Ball and Cornelius Burns each made 6.5 tackles to lead Aliceville, and Tyjhawn Hill and Simon each intercepted passes.
Aliceville (4-2) will host Lamar County at 7 p.m. Friday.
