Mississippi University for Women saw its volleyball team improve to 2-1 over the weekend, defeating in-state rival Belhaven for the first time since sports were reintroduced to MUW in 2017. The Owls won the match 3-1 with set scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-23.
Belhaven (1-3) won each of the previous 13 meetings between the teams before MUW’s win on Saturday.
“Beating Belhaven today was a huge win for us, as a program,” Owls head coach Breylee Linder said of the victory. “It wasn’t a pretty match on our side, but the team found a way to still come out successful. It was also our first Division III match-up of the season, and I believe that we can come out of it confident for the rest of the season.”
Junior MC Brown had another strong game in her first season with the Owls, leading the team with 14 kills. Brown was named the Owl of the Week for her performance in the season opener, and she continues to be an X-factor in her first year with the team.
The Owls hit the road for the first time this week, traveling to face Huntingdon College on Tuesday night. The next home match will be a reverse fixture, hosting Huntingdon at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Pohl Gymnasium.
