LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Mississippi University for Women’s basketball teams were on the road in conference action last week.

The Lady Owls picked up a big win on the road at Spalding University, rebounding from a defeat to Greenville University to win 66-57 at their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals on Saturday.
The team’s leading scorer Calysia Phillips once again stood out for the Owls, posting a game-high 27 points to keep MUW in reach of a postseason berth at the conference tournament.
Phillips led the Owls out to a hot start in the first half, shooting 5-6 from three-point land to help her team to a 33-23 lead going into halftime. The Owls were able to keep up the hot shooting down the final stretch, hitting 35% of their shots from beyond the arc and closing out the win.
Head coach Eric Vaughn acknowledged the significance of the win and gave credit where it was due to a squad that stepped up when it mattered.
“It was a season-saving win on the road,” Vaughn said of the victory. “The girls competed at a high level. Kymani Smith, a freshman who had hardly played all year, started and gave us an opportunity to take Phillips off the ball and she could play her natural position of shooting guard. Smith did a good job, especially getting thrown in the fire. Claire Leak, Conley Langford, and Maddie Guerin all hit big shots down the stretch to seal the victory. Reshya Hudson had, arguably, her best game of the year with a big double-double.”
Hudson’s double-double came in at 11 points and 14 rebounds while Langford joined her and Phillips in double figures, scoring 10 points while adding three steals and five boards.
The men weren’t as fortunate in their results, losing 101-95 in a high-scoring contest at Greenville before falling 48-37 in a defensive affair at Spalding. They’re now 8-9 on the season, 5-5 in SLIAC play.
This week the Owls hoops teams are back on the road at Fontbonne University on Thursday and Principia College on Saturday before returning for a pair of home games the following week.
In addition to basketball, the Owls track and field teams are traveling to Birmingham for the UAB Green & Gold Invitational and the Owls softball team is heading to Rhodes College for a weekend invitation to lead off their 2025 season.
