Freshman Vini Lopes scored his 12th goal of the season just 3 minutes into the contest and the Mississippi University for Women men’s soccer team went on to a 3-0 win over Southwestern Adventist University on Monday in Keene, Texas.
The shutout was the third in four days for the Owls (6-4), who have four for the seasons. Since a goal during the 54th minute Sept. 26 against Rhodes, The W has blanked its opponents for 291 minutes.
Lopes’ 12 goals ranks second in the USCAA statistics.
Victor Gomez scored his first goal of the season during the 19th minute, while Pedro Santana tallied his third goal of the season 6 minutes later with fellow Brazilian Paulo Carneiro assisting.
The W outshot the Warriors 14-1, with six of the shots going on goal.
Next up for the Owls is a Friday trip to Florida, where they will face Pensacola Christian College.
Women’s soccer
Owls flip script in rout of SWAU
A day after the Mississippi University for Women women’s soccer took one on the chin in a 6-2 loss Sunday at Southwestern Adventist University, the Owls returned the favor in convincing fashion, crushing the Warriors 9-1 in Keene, Texas.
Shelby Harrington and Sarah Havens each recorded a hat trick for the Owls (4-5), who played without three players injured during Sunday’s game.
“Huge win for us,” Owls coach Catie Lyles said. “After a not-so-good game (Sunday) the girls beat adversity and came back with a huge win today.
“Yesterday, we lost three players to injury. Today, we had several players step up and play in some different positions. I am so very proud of the entire roster. They came back today with the goal of earning the win, and they did just that.”
Sophomore Adrianna Parsons scored twice and assisted on three goals, while Hannah Helms posted a goal and an assist.
“I thought we all played very well as a team today despite what happened (Sunday),” senior goalkeeper Sarah Gilliland said. “I couldn’t be more proud of each player and how they performed.”
Volleyball
Owls take NCAA Division II foe to four sets
Jasmine Kelly finished with 8 kills and 3 solo blocks Monday, but the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team dropped a 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 28-26 decision to Lane College, an NCAA Division II school in Jackson, Tennessee.
Maggie Griggs served up five consecutive winners, including back-to-back-to-back aces, as the Owls (0-9) opened up a 16-10 lead in the opening set. The W spotted the Dragons 5 points in the second set but pulled even at 14-14. From there, there were eight ties and eight lead changes before Lane evened the match.
The Owls led the third set 10-5 before the Dragons put together a 7-point run. And the Owls held a 5-0 lead in the fourth before Lane pulled even at 10-10, and neither side would lead by more than 2 points the rest of the way.
Llayne Skinner added 6 kills and 9 digs for the Owls, while Sarah White, Hannah Duran and Griggs each booked 5 kills. Duran chipped in 10 assists and 9 digs, while Griggs drew 5 aces.
Camryn Johnson led the team with 14 assists while making 6 digsl. Suggs’ 25 digs led all players in the match.
The W will be back in action at noon Friday against Dillard University in New Orleans.
