Ole Miss senior guard/forward Madison Scott scored a team-high 19 points Thursday night at Georgia, and the Rebels defeated the Lady Bulldogs 63-58 at Georgia’s Stegeman Coliseum. The Rebels (14-6, 5-3) have won their last four matchups with the Lady Bulldogs.
Scott led the Rebels with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while senior guard Kennedy Todd-Williams scored 15.
“I thought Madi was phenomenal from a leadership standpoint, just keeping everybody composed,” Ole Miss head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin said. “ … That’s what you expect. … Two people I expect to show up every game, Madison Scott and Kennedy Todd-Williams. Those are the two that have been in the fire with me last year, so they know what it’s like. Everybody else is learning.”
Scott scored the first four points of the game for Ole Miss, which jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held Georgia scoreless for more than half of the first quarter. The Bulldogs (9-13, 1-7) closed the first strong, finishing the quarter on a 10-2 run and taking a one-point lead into the second.
The Rebels regained their composure in the second and led by 10 with just over two minutes left in the half and led 31-23 at halftime. Todd-Williams scored 12 points in the first half, while Scott scored 11.
Georgia cut the lead down to three with just more than seven minutes left in the third on a 3-pointer from Asia Avinger. Ole Miss proceeded to make four of its next five field goals to surge ahead by 11 and led by seven heading to the fourth.
Ole Miss was held without a field goal the first eight minutes of the fourth but hit 7 of 8 free throws before junior forward Christeen Iwuala hit a layup through contact. The Rebels made 1 of 10 field goals in the fourth but finished 23 of 28 from the free throw line overall.
Avinger led the Bulldogs with 19 points.
The Rebels were coming off a tight loss against No. 7 Texas in which they led by eight in the fourth quarter.
“Just really fighting through adversity. Staying composed, not letting that loss define us, because we’re better than that,” Todd-Williams said. “ … We can compete at the highest level … (against) any top-25 team, because we are one of them. We should be in there.”
Ole Miss plays at No. 23 Vanderbilt Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
