Ole Miss redshirt sophomore quarterback Austin Simmons – who is widely expected to take over as the Rebels’ starter in 2025 following the graduation of Jaxson Dart – is “no longer on the baseball roster,” Ole Miss said in a statement Saturday.
Simmons, who enrolled at Ole Miss playing both sports after reclassifying up two years, pitched in 13 games as a true freshman reliever for the Rebels in 2024. The hard-throwing left-hander had a 3.21 ERA, struck out 20 batters and walked 11. He missed the final portion of the baseball season with an elbow injury.
“After having a conversation with Coach (Mike) Bianco, Austin Simmons is no longer on the baseball roster so that he can concentrate on playing football,” the statement said.
Simmons did not log any action his first season but was Dart’s top backup in 2024, completing 19 of 32 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns overall. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder from Florida was thrust into action in the first quarter against then-No. 3 Georgia following an injury to Dart on the game’s first possession and led a touchdown drive, completing 5 of 6 passes for 64 yards. Dart reentered the game on the next possession in the Rebels’ 28-10 upset win.
