CANTON — The Oak Hill Academy golf team added to its dominant stretch with another Class 4A Midsouth Association of Independent Schools state championship on Monday, with Raiders occupying first, second, third, fifth and sixth in the final standings.
This is the school’s ninth title in a row, and the first under new head coach Tim Yelverton.
Yelverton’s daughter, Eliza, won the overall championship with a score of 9-under-par while his son, Bryant, finished second with a score of 7-under.
Sophomores George Bryan and Kaiden Brantley also registered third place finishes with 2-under scores, while Owen Weber, Payne Bius and Lucy Cook rounded out with Top 6 finishes.
“Oak Hill Golf has a rich history that started many years ago with the leadership and guidance of VJ Trolio,” head coach Tim Yelverton said. “The team has learned that through hard work and committing to their process, they can succeed on and off the golf course.”
Trolio oversaw the program until January of this year, when Yelverton took over. The Raiders have shown no signs of slowing down despite the coaching change, and Trolio gave credit where it was due for the culture of winning that has been in place throughout recent years.
“Even though I am no longer the coach there, I’m so proud of the players, the school administration and the coaches,” Trolio said. “It’s just such a legacy for Northeast Mississippi, West Point and the Raiders.”
Like Trolio before him, Yelverton was a teaching professional at Old Waverly and is a member of the Southern Miss Hall of Fame for his successful four years on the golf team. He knows about winning and the work that it takes, as well as the importance of building on past successes in the program.
“I discussed with the team that there’s no such thing as overnight success,” Yelverton said. “We are always thankful for what the prior class contributed to Oak Hill golf, and we accept the responsibility to pass that on to the next year’s team. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first season coaching Oak Hill and look forward to continuing to grow these golfers and the Oak Hill golf program.”
The Raiders will participate in the MAIS overall tournament on Apr. 21.
