Senior Meyon Foster, juniors Cierra Crusoe and Khristan Watson and sophomore Jerquavious Lowery each won events Saturday to highlight the performance of the Columbus High School track and field team at the MHSAA North State Championships in Vicksburg.
Foster captured the girls 100-meter hurdles in 16.62 seconds and placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (56.42) and the triple jump (31 feet, 0.50 inches). Crusoe won the girls discus with a throw of 85-2.00 and also placed second in the girls shot put with a 31-9.50 heave.
Lowery’s winning 200 time was 21.90, and he placed second in the 100 in 10.83. Watson’s 6-0 won the high jump, and he finished fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.00).
Senior Michael Mosely had a strong day in the sprints for the Falcons, finishing third in the 100 (10.87) and 200 (24.63) and taking fourth in the 400 (52.90). Freshman Darius Miller finished second in the high jump (5-10) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (44.06).
Other top-five finishes came from freshman Madison Dooley in the girls 3,200 (5th, 18:22.29), junior Johnasia O’Neal in the girls 300 hurdles (4th, 49.15), senior Mashanti Sadler in the long jump (3rd, 16-5.50) and junior Nevaeh McKinsey in the discus (5th, 74-1).
On the boys side, freshman Darius Miller took second in the high jump (5-10) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (44.06), while sophomore Deion Williams placed third in the long jump (21-10.00) followed by junior Derovce Williams (4th, 21-1.00).
New Hope did not have any individual winners, but the girls 4×800 team won in 10:46.13. The best individual finishers were a trio of third-place efforts: sophomore Megan Neeb in the 800 (2:36.96), junior Jakiya Lewis in the girls shot put (30-00) and the boys 4×400 (3:38.68).
Senior Keturah Johnson placed fourth in the girls 800 (2:38.03), and senior Jacob Goodman took fifth in the boys shot put (41-9.00).
For West Point, both 4×100 teams finished third, the boys in 43.44 and the girls in 50.94. The best individual finish was senior Kiara Weatherspoon’s fifth-place effort in the long jump (15-10.50).
Class 6A
Diamond Brooks won the girls long jump, and junior Sterling Scott captured the boys triple jump (44-2.50) to lead Starkville High School in the Class 6A North State Championships in Clinton.
Scott also placed second in the long jump (23-9.00).
The Starkville girls finished fourth with 39 team points, while the boys placed seventh with 48. Host Clinton won both titles, racking up 237 points in the girls meet and 180 in the boys.
Sophomore Veronica Dunne took third in the girls pole vault (8-6.00), and sophomore Braylon Burnside did the same in the boys high jump (5-10).
Other top-five finishes for Starkville included junior Grady Stewart in the boys 400 (4th, 50.60), junior Anthony Hogan in the boys discus (5th, 109-10), the girls 4×200 (2nd, 1:43.94) and 4×100 (3rd, 50.33) and the boys 4×100 (4th, 43.61) and 4×200 (1:31.54).
Class 4A
In Pontotoc, freshman Alexis Wilburn won the girls high jump and senior Bobby Schultz took first in the boys shot put for Caledonia in the Class 4A North State meet.
Wilburn cleared 5-0 to earn the win, and she placed sixth in the triple jump (29-11).
Tee Lathan took second in the girls high jump (4-10) and placed fifth in the long jump (14-11.25). Fourth-place finishers included sophomore Emma Ruffin in the girls 3,200 (13:09.00), junior Wyatt Enger in the boys discus (110-8) and junior Logan Burges in the boys pole vault (9-6).
Finishing fifth for the Cavaliers were junior Emily Clark in the girls pole vault (6-6), senior Darius Triplett in the boys 200 (23.50), sophomore Jacob Huff in the boys 110 hurdles (16.00), sophomore Micah O’Daniel in the boys triple jump (42-2.75) and sophomore Judd Shellhut in the boys discus (108-2).
The Caledonia girls finished fifth with 42.50 points; Senatobia won with 143. The Caledonia boys also placed fifth with 49 points; Senatobia also won that title with 158 points.
Class 3A
Sophomore Lekyieron Dancy finished third in the 100 (11.86) and 200 (22.64), and junior Anthony Little did the same in the boys long jump with a leap of 19-5.50 to highlight Noxubee County’s performance at the MHSAA Class 3A North State meet in Winona.
Sophomore Keasia Taylor took fifth in the girls 800 in 3:55.00 and took sixth in the high jump by clearing 4-0.
All four Tigers boys relays teams placed in the top six: the 4×100 (4th, 45.83), the 4×200 (5th, 1:35.90), the 4×400 (5th, 3:50.00) and the 4×800 (6th, 11:01.00).
The MHSAA Championships will be Saturday in Pearl.
